Have you met Vidar?
Naming characters in a story is like naming your children. Sometimes you nail it! And other times, the perfect name reveals itself after the fact–hopefully, this part happens with story characters more often than with children. When an author finds the perfect name for a character after writing, they can easily go into their documents and change that name by using “find and replace.” However, I can’t just change a name in my stories without telling you Reader or explaining why. So here it goes… My character, Ulfur, has a new name and backstory. Why? I always had a big vision for Ulfur in my writing – both in my short stories and my current longer-length project. I wanted his backstory to set him apart from the other characters. He is the lingering link between Norse mythology and Celtic/Icelandic lore that I love reimagining. When I started writing, I loved the name “Ulfur” so much that I made up a backstory from scratch. But to be honest, I found holes in my approach. Then, as I revisited the Prose Edda, one particular character caught my attention. I understood that this new character and backstory were exactly what I was searching for in the character of Ulfur. I’m pleased to announce that In the Company of Elves has had a slight revision to introduce the new character of Vidar. You can still read it for free here. If you previously downloaded the e-book, you will need to remove it from your e-reading app and download it again to see the updates. But, if you don’t have time to re-read the tale, don’t worry. I’ll be sharing more about Vidar and the details of the change in the coming weeks. So, you’ll be up to speed for future stories without missing a beat. As for the name “Ulfur,” I loved it so much that I stole it for a much more tangible and personal project. One that was nine months in the making, if you know what I mean 😉.
