The path of good, evil & mystery—which will you choose?

You know, Reader, the more time I spend researching 13th-century Scotland and Thomas the Rhymer, the more I fall in love with his legend and the Scottish Border region.

With such a history and breathtaking landscapes, it’s no wonder the area is full of legend, lore, and myth.

The story of Thomas the Rhymer is heavily inspired by the landscape itself, which is evident in some of the literary themes, including the fork-in-the-road metaphor.

But instead of the two-path dilemma, this tale features three paths to choose from: the path of good, evil, and mystery.

This portion of the tale sees Thomas and the Queen of Elfland either kissing or laying together under the Eildon tree—depending on the version you read—after which Thomas is ensnared by the Queen. He then must accompany her on the long journey back to Elfland.

Along the way, the Queen points out the three paths, explaining where each of them leads as follows:

O see not ye yon narrow road, so thick beset wi thorns and briers?
That is the path of righteousness, tho after it but few enquires.

And see not ye that braid braid road, that lies across yon lillie leven?
That is the path of wickedness, tho some call it the road to heaven.

And se not ye that bonny road, which winds about the fernie brae?
That is the road to Elfland, where you and I this night maun gae.

The Queen then leads her horse, and Thomas with her, down the path to Elfland, of course.

And now, Reader, I’m giving you the opportunity to follow the bonny road to Elfland too by signing up to be a Beta Reader for my upcoming retelling of Thomas the Rhymer.

Here is the teaser:

After centuries of protecting the peace in Elphame, Queen Aranara yearns for the freedom and happiness she’s only known in her deepest dreams. But with rumoured threats from the human world, growing divisions amongst her people, and dark hearts ready to seize her throne, Aranara’s desires are beyond her grasp.

The future of Elphame and her own destiny are at stake when she meets the human that could ruin everything—Thomas Learmont. Will Aranara follow her heart or her duties as the legendary monarch of Elphame? Find out in The Fall of the Queen of Elphame, Book One in The Eildon Tree series.

I’m currently seeking 2 more Beta Readers and you do not need to have read any of my other stories to qualify, although you might find some easter eggs in this story if you have read In the Company of Elves.

What does a Beta Reader do? Read my short story and give me your honest feedback (no proofing or editing required!). You’re welcome to ask any questions about the plot, characters, or storyline. Your valued feedback helps me polish up the final draft before the official launch.

If you’re interested, please fill out this brief 4-question survey.

Stay tuned for next week's cover art reveal!

Until next week.
