Today’s dark forest has no trees. (And it’s far deadlier)

Reader, when was the last time you felt overwhelmed, threatened, small, and totally lost?

Chances are high that you weren’t in the middle of a dark forest like a fairy tale character.

But I bet you felt this way recently while scrolling on social media.

Between shrinking reach and algorithms, disturbing AI images in the explore fields, and threatening comments and DMs, it’s no wonder these apps are becoming everything the folk tales warned us about the woods.

Think about it. We’ve got…

  • Dangerous witches—not the cool kind—aka influencers selling harmful products
  • Legit online predators, aka the predators in the woods (man and beast)
  • Fake clone accounts, aka dangerous doppelgangers
  • Fake AI accounts, aka apparitions
  • Dopamine hit algorithms that suck away your time, aka the fairy rings that make you dance til you drop

It seems that social media (and the internet in general) has replaced the deep, dark forest of folk and fairy tales.

Now, I used to love social media, especially Instagram. But any marketing expert will tell you that these platforms care nothing for our reach or our enjoyment.

They only want one thing: bigger profits.

If social media is still your place of enjoyment, that’s great for you.

However, finding me active on social media is like trying to catch a brownie in the act of doing their good deeds—it’s just not gonna happen.

That’s why I love that you chose to join my email list. I love talking about folklore, fairy tales, and fantasy fiction … with a dash of history on top.

And you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t enjoy it too.

My mission this year is to create spaces for this type of information independent of social media.

I’m currently working on a new website page that will serve as a hub for free information and resources on folklore, history, and fantasy that focuses on my favourite topics: elves, huldufolk, Thomas the Rhymer, etc.

But it’s not all about me! I want to know what your dream resources would be.

>>Do you wish it was easier to read original versions of folktales?

>>Do you want book recommendations?

>>Online workshops with experts?

>>More original stories?

>>Guest writers?

>>Mini digital courses?

The only limit is your imagination, so dream big, Reader, reply with your thoughts, and I’ll see what I can make happen.

Until next time,

Natalie Guttormsson
